    A New Generation of Cool White Dwarf Atmosphere Models Using Ab Initio Calculations

    Due to their high photospheric density, cool helium-rich white dwarfs (particularly DZ, DQpec and ultracool) are often poorly described by current atmosphere models. As part of our ongoing efforts to design atmosphere models suitable for all cool white dwarfs, we investigate how the ionization ratio of heavy elements and the H2_2-He collision-induced absorption (CIA) spectrum are altered under fluid-like densities. For the conditions encountered at the photosphere of cool helium-rich white dwarfs, our ab initio calculations show that the ionization of most metals is inhibited and that the H2_2-He CIA spectrum is significantly distorted for densities higher than 0.1 g/cm3^3.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted for publication in the proceedings of the 20th European Workshop on White Dwarf

    Pressure Distortion of the H2_2-He Collision-Induced Absorption at the Photosphere of Cool White Dwarf Stars

    Collision-induced absorption (CIA) from molecular hydrogen is a dominant opacity source in the atmosphere of cool white dwarfs. It results in a significant flux depletion in the near-IR and IR parts of their spectra. Because of the extreme conditions of helium-rich atmospheres (where the density can be as high as a few g/cm3^3), this opacity source is expected to undergo strong pressure distortion and the currently used opacities have not been validated at such extreme conditions. To check the distortion of the CIA opacity we applied state-of-the-art ab initio methods of computational quantum chemistry to simulate the CIA opacity at high densities. The results show that the CIA profiles are significantly distorted above densities of 0.1g/cm30.1\,{\rm g/cm}^3 in a way that is not captured by the existing models. The roto-translational band is enhanced and shifted to higher frequencies as an effect of the decrease of the interatomic separation of the H2_2 molecule. The vibrational band is blueward shifted and split into QRQ_R and QPQ_P branches, separated by a pronounced interference dip. Its intensity is also substantially reduced. The distortions result in a shift of the maximum of the absorption from 2.3μm2.3\,\mu{\rm m} to 37μm3-7 \mu{\rm m}, which could potentially explain the spectra of some very cool, helium-rich white dwarfs.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures.     USE OF INHALANT ANESTHETICS IN THREE SNAKE SPECIES

    Different snake species respond differently to various anesthetic agents. Hence, an anesthetic procedure developed for one species cannot necessarily be safely transferred to another species. The goal of this paper is to summarize our experience using inhalant anesthetics on three snake species, including both procedures that were successful and those we found to be less satisfactory. We found isoflurane delivered with a precision vaporizer to be the best agent to anesthetize black rat snakes (Elaphe o. obsoleta). Sex and mass did not seem to affect induction times in black rat snakes, but larger female rat snakes recovered faster from anesthesia than smaller females. Halothane delivered in the open method provided consistent anesthesia in northern water snakes (Nerodia s. sipedon), although it caused some mortality and should not be used on debilitated patients. Halothane delivered with a precision vaporizer may be used to anesthetize eastern massasauga rattlesnakes (Sistrurus c. catenatus). However, care must be taken to prevent mortality resulting from anesthetic overdose. Sex and mass had no effect on induction and recovery times in the rattlesnakes, but stressed animals require longer induction and recovery times

    The Roles of Labor and Profitability in Choosing a Grazing Strategy for Beef Production in the U.S. Gulf Coast Region

    Comparisons are made concerning labor required and profitability associated with continuous grazing at three stocking rates and rotational grazing at a high stocking rate in the U.S. Gulf Coast region. A unique data set was collected using a time and motion study method to determine labor requirements. Profits are lowest for low stocking rate– continuous grazing and high stocking rate–rotational grazing. Total labor and labor in three specific categories are greater on per acre and/or per cow bases with rotational-grazing than with continuous-grazing strategies. Ticks are classified in the subclass Acari, order Parasitiformes, suborder Ixodida and are distributed worldwide from Arctic to tropical regions3. Despite efforts to control tick infestations, these ectoparasites remain a serious problem for human and animal health4,5

    The neurochemical changes underlying human emotions and social behaviour are largely unknown. Here we report on the changes in the levels of two hypothalamic neuropeptides, hypocretin-1 and melanin-concentrating hormone, measured in the human amygdala. We show that hypocretin-1 levels are maximal during positive emotion, social interaction and anger, behaviours that induce cataplexy in human narcoleptics. In contrast, melanin-concentrating hormone levels are minimal during social interaction, but are increased after eating. Both peptides are at minimal levels during periods of postoperative pain despite high levels of arousal. Melanin-concentrating hormone levels increase at sleep onset, consistent with a role in sleep induction, whereas hypocretin-1 levels increase at wake onset, consistent with a role in wake induction. Levels of these two peptides in humans are not simply linked to arousal, but rather to specific emotions and state transitions. Other arousal systems may be similarly emotionally specialized

    Les technosols construits sont une alternative au prélèvement de terre végétale en milieu naturel. La gestion durable de ces technosols suppose de comprendre l'évolution de leurs propriétés hydriques. Nous avons analysé les courbes de retrait de technosols dont la teneur en compost varie de 0 à 50%, en présence ou non de plantes et/ou de vers de terre. Les résultats montrent que ces organismes expliquent plus la variance (19%) des propriétés hydriques du sol que la dose de compost (14%). Le compost et les plantes jouent un rôle positif sur l'eau disponible présente à la fois dans la macroporosité et dans la microporosité, les vers de terre jouant un rôle positif uniquement sur cette dernière. L'effet conjoint des organismes et du compost explique davantage la variance ( 40%) que les effets simples de ces facteurs. En règle générale, l'effet simple du compost est inférieur à celui des plantes et des vers
